Abstract
Giovanni (John) Benfratello was born in Palermo on 8 January 1883 to Guglielmo Benfratello and Luisa Barba, and was the nephew of the renowned Salvatore Benfratello (1881–1953). A law student, he graduated on 29 June 1906 and embarked on a legal career. For many years he served as President of the Tax Commission and of the Censuary Commission of Palermo. He is remembered for having been world champion (individual and team) in sabre and épée in Vienna in 1911, for competing in the Stockholm Olympic Games in 1912, and for being proclaimed European sabre champion in Ghent in 1913. In 1963 the Italian Fencing Federation awarded him the gold medal for lifetime achievement. John Benfratello died in Palermo on 9 February 1966.
