Abstract
Matteo Marrone, son of Oreste Marrone and Serafina Guerra, was born in Palermo on 13 October 1929. He enrolled in the Faculty of Law in the 1946–47 academic year; on 5 July 1950 he defended his thesis, “La denuntiatio nel processo romano classico”, graduating with full marks (110/110 cum laude). A pupil of Lauro Chiazzese, he went on to have a distinguished academic career: from 1956 to 2004 he taught in the same Faculty he had attended, serving as its Dean from 1976 to 1985. In 1998 and 1999 he also led the University as its senior professor (Decano). He became Professor Emeritus of Roman Law and is remembered as a leading figure of the University of Palermo. A continuator of the Palermo school of Roman law and a widely respected authority within both the national and international scholarly community, he served as President of the Italian Society for the History of Law (1985–1988) and as President of ARISTEC (Association for Historical and Comparative Research) from 1995 to 1999. He was a member of the Sicilian Society for Homeland History and of the Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts of Palermo, where he also served as Vice‑President. In February 2014 he received the “Premio Internacional Ursicino Álvarez”, awarded by the Academia Matriense de Derecho Romano del Notariado and the Fundación Seminario de Derecho Romano Ursicino Álvarez. Matteo Marrone passed away at the age of ninety on Wednesday, 8 April 2020.
